Obituary MR J. D. SWAN
CN.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 15. A member of the board of the Tourist Hotel Corporation, Mr James D. Swan, died today aged 74. As a lieutenant-colonel in the first World War, he was assistant-Director of Supplies and Transport for the Northern Military District and was responsible in 1942 for the rationing and supplying of nearly 100,000 New Zealand and United States’ troops in the district. Mr Swan was commissioned in the First World War. After the war he went to live in Taupo and was deputyMayor and chairman Of the Rotorua National Party. He was also manager of the Grand Hotel, Auckland for several years. He was widely known in Auckland through his interests in amateur theatricals. He was awarded the 0.8. E. for Second World War service.
He had the unusual experience of winning with one ticket the first £lO,OOO prize in an overseas lottery, and another prize of £l5O, which he spent in entertaining all who called to congratulate him. He is survived by his wife, and a son.
