Tanker Drivers Return To Work

(New Zealand Press Auociationf AUCKLAND, June 14. Auckland petrol tanker drivers resumed deliveries of petrol and oil late this morning and averted a major stoppage of private and commercial transport and some industry.

The resumption of fuel supplies relieved a critical situation at many service stations. Some industries were unable to work this morning because there was no oil. There was no work at the Westfield Freesing Company. Ltd., Otahuhu, until noon. A company spokesman said that if the fuel supplies had not been resumed hundreds would have been laid off. Apart from a few toker deliveries of oil late yesterday afternoon those this morning were the first since Friday. The 120 tanker drivers decided to return to work after a meeting this morning although their demands for better wages, conditions and fringe benefits had not been met.

Mr G. H. Andersen, secretary of the Northern Drivers' Union, said the resumption had been decided to ensure continuity of work in other industries.

“There will be other actions to win for the drivers the conditions they seek,” he said. A meeting of Auckland trade union officials tomorrow morning would consider the

dispute. The Federation of Labour would be invited. Mr Andersen criticised the oil companies for stopping deliveries of oil to industry yesterday afternoon after it had been agreed at a meeting that other workers should not suffer because of the dispute. He was sure the action would not go unnoticed by the public.
