Kaimai Crash £133,150 PAID TO CLAIMANTS
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. Settlement of all but one of the 15 claims for compensation arising from the crash of an N.A.C. aircraft in the Kaimais cost the Crown £44,909, the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) told Parliament today.
A total of £133,150 has been paid to settle the 14 claims, and of this amount £BB,OOO has been contributed by N.A.C. and its insurers.
Mr N. V. Douglas (Opp., Auckland Central) asked how much was this in excess of the amount which would have been paid if the normal limit of liability had been applicable on the flight.
Mr McAlpine said the limitation of £5OOO applied to claims against N.A.C., not to claims against the Civil Aviation Department, but the fact that the decision of the Supreme Court that the limitation did not apply, was under appeal, created a doubt. This was one of a number of factors taken into account in effecting the compromise settlement, he said.
