PENSIONER FLATS
Reserve Land For Site
Proposals for the finance committee to build pensioner flats on part of a council reserve at Walsall street drew objection at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council. Riccarton was poorly off for reserves, said the Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw). While Walsall street was an ok ares, 10 or 15 years could see it redeveloped, with an even greater need for a reserve. The council had back land, and he would approve of the flats being built there. • The committee chairman (Cr. R. W. J. Harrington) said it was hoped to get more land round the reserve, but there was an urgent need now for more flats. To Cr. F. R. Longley, Cr. Harrington said that about 50 perches of reserve would be taken for the flats (out of about two acres). In general discussion. It was stated that the reserve was not developed. The council agreed with the committee’s recommendation that immediate steps be taken to build nine pensioner flats at Walsall street. The clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) was asked to see if older-type properties near the reserve could be bought
