STANDARD CYCLING FEES AND DATES

Clubs in the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre will be instructed to standardise entry fees and clostng dates for all centre, club, and inter-club races, a meeting of the centre decided last evening. Entry fees of 5s for seven major races (various memorial races and centre events), and 3s for club, inter-club and Canterbury championships were suggested at the annual general meeting and clubs were asked for their comments.

The Papanui club, the only one to reply, requested that this be enforced and, after considerable discussion, it was approved unanimously. The meeting was also unanlmous in tne vote, though not in discussion, that the closing date for the same major races be 10 days before the event. Points made in favour of this were that more up-to-date performances were available and riders would not be required to decide their races three events earlier. REQUEST DECLINED A request from Papanui for members of the club to compete. at their own expense in the national Hope Gibbons 25mile teams’ time trial event, was declined. Mr W. S. Williams (Avon) said the centre had decided to concentrate its attentions on the national 100 kilometres teams' time trial —which will be held for the first time this year—and to approve the request would be going against its previous wishes. "In view of the fact that the riders asked for this, we may be out of step with the riders.” said Mr D. R. Johnson (Papanui). “Why should we dig our toes in, when this is not what the cyclists want. “It’s no good us standing on one side of the fence saving to riders, ’you want this’, and their standing on the other side, saying, ‘no. we don't .” said Mr Johnson. However, It was painted out

that the Hope Gibbons event "shall be competed for . .by the winning teams of the provisional Hope Gibbons Shield contests held In centres." Canterbury Is holding no such local event: thus there will be no local winning team.
