Fairlie Wins Round
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyriphtl LONDON. B. FalrMe of New Zealand was untroubled on Monday to win his opening match in the London lawn tennis championships at Queen's Club. Fairlie, the Auckland junior and a member of New Zealand's Davis Cup team, beat Britain's D. G. Battrfck, 6-4, 6-4. The Australian, R. Emerson, the Wimbledon champion, struggling to And form and fitness, came within a game of defeat in his opening match in the championships. Emerson was given the run around over the first half of his second-round match with A. Segal, of South Africa. Then Segal, serving for the match at 7-6 in the second set, ran out of steam. Emerson thus reprieved, found a surer touch to turn the match his way and went on to win, 1-6, 16-14, 6-1.
L. Gerrard, New Zealand’s No. 1 player,- went into the third round after beating an Australian. R. Reffels, 6-4, 6-4.
