Kaiapoi Inspired By Bond's Play

Kalapoi’s defeat of Sydenham during the sixth round of the Canterbury Rugby

League championship recently was a personal triumph for the captain-coach, J. E. Bond. In addition to kicking six goals—one a magnificent effort from 60 yards out— Bond has proved an inspiration to Kaiapoi with his experience and leadership on the field. It is not coincidence that Kalapoi’s other championship win this season, over Linwood, was attained when Bond kicked seven goals. The veteran forward reached his half-century of points against Sydenham, the fifth senior player to pass this mark. He has kicked 29 goals. Bond made three overseas tours with the Kiwis between 1953 and 1956 and played in seven tests. He transferred from Marist to Kaiapoi in 1964.
