Drove Car On Footpath Among Theatre Crowds

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 13. A young man who drove his car along the footpath on both sides of Queen street, Auckland, on a Saturday night was sentenced to one month’s gaol, fined £75, placed on 12 months’ probation and disqualified from driving until March, 1972, by Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., today. He was Graham Warren Paul, aged 21, a roof tiler, and he had pleaded guilty last week to five charges relating to the incident His gaol sentence was on charges of assaulting a constable and driving while disqualified, the terms being concurrent On a charge of dangerous driving he was

fined £75. He was convicted and discharged for driving a vehicle without a warrant of fitness. The Court was told Paul’s licence had been suspended until March, 1969. The Magistrate extended this suspension until March, 1972. He also placed him on a year’s probation. Earlier evidence was that Paul had driven along the footpath on both sides of Queen street. Theatre-goers

had been forced to jump clear to avoid being struck. When aproached by the police, Paul had held out a bottle of beer and offered a drink to the constable. He had violently resisted arrest and fought with policemen, injuring one.
