Authority Wants To Plan Terminal

(Nev Zealand Presv Aiiociatton) AUCKLAND, June 12. The Auckland Regional Authority will ask the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) to transfer immediately responsibility for the design of the permanent terminal building at the Auckland International Airport from the Civil Aviation Department to the authority.

A deputation from the authority is expected to call on Mr Holyoake soon.

The authority’s airport committee decided this today after receiving a letter from the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) saying that

the £1 million terminal could not be completed until 1971 —two years later than promised. The authority wants to go ahead immediately, with the assistance of a senior Ministry of Works architect in Auckland. After reviewing earlier stages of planning Mr McAlpine said it was apparent that the maximum effort required of his department and the Ministry to bring the interim facilities into use by November last year greatly reduced the effort available for the development of the permanent terminal. "It would appear that insufficient time was allowed for a programme that turned out to be more difficult than expected,” he said.
