Mediterranean Scene In Ballroom

The Winter Garden was transformed into a scene from the French Mediterranean for the St Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association annual hall on Saturday evening. A canoe and paddles greeted guests in the foyer, fishing nets containing fish and shells were arranged around the pillars of the ballroom and the official alcove became a French pavement cafe with small tables and beach umbrellas. Driftwood, shells, seaweed, combined with water skis, coloured balls and beach towels. Seven hundred attended. Guests were welcomed by the president (Mrs E. A. Lee), who wore a gown of lacquer red delustred satin with formal sprays of gold roses. It was cut on straight lines with two deep folds at the back. Mrs J. K. Lawrence chose a midnight blue brocade gown with a silvered pattern. The frock was designed with a slim fitting bodice with narrow straps. Other associations represented included: St Andrew’s College Old Boys’ Association (Mr and Mrs G. A. M. Hilson); St. Bede’s College (Mr and Mrs P. G. Egden); Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association (Mr E. W. D. Unwin and Miss Unwin); Christchurch Boys’ High School (Mr and Mrs K. W. Hobbs); Christchurch West High School (Mr and Mrs R. G.

Thomson); Parent-Teacher Association (Mr P. B. Austin and Mrs Austin). The committee which organised the ball comprised: Mesdames E. A. Lee, J. N. Matson, L. H. Scott, R. Collins, J. K. Lawrence, P. F. Maples, F. S. Penman, P. G. Egden, J. F. Burn, R. L. Thompson, B. K. Wagner, M. H. Logan, Misses L. Gardner, M. Cook, J. Green, S. Thompson, J. Young.
