Bricklaying By Contract
Sir,—l have recently arrived in Christchurch from the North Island and over the last
few weeks I have noticed a rise in award rates for bricklayers; included was a clause that no sub-letting be undertaken—i.e., labour-only contracts. In your issue of May 20 there is a statement by the national secretary of the Carpenters’ Union, Mr W. F. Molineaux, decrying the labour-only contracts. 1 know this was tried in Christchurch at one time but was stopped; however, it is quite common in Wellington. I turn to the “situations vacant” column and see an advertisement for blocklayers and bricklayers. ‘Top contract rates.” Why is the bricklayer allowed to work either labour-only or piecework, which can produce the shoddy workmanship that Mr Molineaux had mentioned in his statement? That is one reason why I will not be bricklaying while in Christchurch. —Yours, etc., BRICKLAYER.
May 22. 1966. [Mr G. S. Gardner, secretary of the Canterbury' Subcontractors’ Association, replies: “The Master Bricklayers’ Association as a group strongly opposes labour-only contracts. This view is also fully supported by the Subcontractors' Association, whose members cover all of the sub-contractors in the building trade. In this matter sub-contractors share the views of the Carpenters’ Union and consider it is regrettable that someone is endeavouring to . introduce labour-only contracts.”]
