Lions Raise £560 For Health Scheme
Two cheques amounting to £560 were presented to Sir Edmund Hillary by the combined Lions clubs in the Christchurch area, and the Ashburton club, at a function on Saturday evening.
The money will be used in the Volunteer Service Abroad health scheme. The amount represents the proceeds from film and lecture evenings given by Sir Edmund Hillary at Christchurch and Ashburton and organised by the Lions clubs. Dr. E. I. S. Kincaid presented a cheque for £450 on behalf of the Lions clubs in the greater city area. Dr. M. Otley handed over a cheque for £llO on behalf of the Ashburton Lions Club.
Receiving them, Sir Edmund Hillary said the Christchurch audience at his lecture
had been the biggest in New Zealand. The amount raised was also the largest. Sir Edmund Hillary said the money would assist in sending a public health team from New Zealand to Sabah.
Also present at the function, held to mark the first anniversary of the Lions Club of Lyttelton receiving its charter, was the Leader of the Opposition (Mr N. E. Kirk). He expressed his deep appreciation of the work the Lyttelton Lions Club had done in its first year and wished the club well for the future.
