MUSICAL SHOW
Gala Opening Planned “I doubt if there has ever been an opening like this before,” said Mr T. A. Kincaid yesterday, describing plans for a gala opening of the musical “Oh What a Lovely War!” in the Majestic Theatre on June 20.
Mr Kincaid, president of the Canterbury Theatre Repertory Society, is the Christchurch promotion manager for the musical show, which will be presented by the New Zealand Theatre Centre.
The English musical is a satirical play about the First World War, and it is planned to have the New Zealand Army Band play in the foyer on the opening night. It will play a selection of First World War songs, and the Army has arranged *o have a recruiting display in the theatre. There will also be a Naval guard of honour, reinforced with First World War veterans, and the stairway will be lined with Red Cross nurses. The theatre will be decorated with flowers for the occasion. Special guests will be Mr Richard Campion, director of the centre, Mr W. Sheat, an executive member of the drama committee of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, and Mrs Constance Scott, secretary-manager of the centre.
New Champion.—The Japanese Y. Numata, took the Orient light-weight boxing title from the champion, F. Elorde, Philippines) in Tokyo yesterday. Elorde was making his twelfth defence of the crown he won 14 years ago.
