Police Station On Same Site Planned
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON, June 10.
The new Christchurch police station will be erected on the present site, which will be augmented by the purchase of adjoining land.
This was confirmed today in Parliament by the Minister of Police (Mr Allen), in reply to a question by Mr H. L. Walker (Govt., St. Albans) Mr Walker also asked when the actual construction work was likely to begin. Mr Allen said the new
building would be a replica of the Auckland police station, and that the same plans, modified to suit the site, would be used.
Tenders for the proposal are likely to be sought in the latter part of next year. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk): Would it be correct to say that delays in proceeding with suburban police stations in the Christchurch area hinge on this?
Mr Allen: Priorities in construction are allocated on a New Zealand-wide basis. Mr Kirk: But would it be true that plans for the relocation of some suburban stations have been held up pending this decision?—No.
When asked about negotiations later today, the national secretary of the Y.M.C.A. (Mr G. F. Briggs) said that his executive had heard nothing definite about the Government being interested in the three-storey Y.M.C.A. building on the corner of Hereford street and Cambridge terrace.
