AN AMERICAN MULCH

I have just learned how to make a good mulch and feel that the recipe, which is said to have appeared in an American newspaper, is so simple to follow (and undoubtedly equally effective) that everyone should have a chance to try it It reads as follows:

“One way of making good mulch during the winter is to collect green leftovers from your own table and the tables of your neighbours and place them in a wellventilated box. It should be located in a dark warm area, like a closet, where decomposition may take place naturally until the mulch is properly formed and suitable for indoor plants. Once every week or so, add manure and mix it thoroughly, turning the mixture until the top layer is completely submerged. Pressure helps too, so anything heavy that you can find should be placed on top. . . .

Unfortunately there was no mention made of where the householders were to stay during the final days of decomposition.
