“Shorten Doctors’ Tour Of Duty”
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. More surgeons would be attracted to serve in the hospital run by the New Zealand medical team at Qui Nhon, South Vietnam, if the tour of duty were shortened to four months, the New Zealand Medical Association said
today. The association said in its latest bulletin: “To ensure a sufficient supply of surgeons we should take a leaf out of the American book and shorten the tour of duty to four months. At present surgeons serve a term of 12 months at the hospital.
“Many young surgeons would be glad to take advantage of the unrivalled opportunities offered by work in Vietnam who are not able, for private reasons, to inter-
rupt their work in New Zealand for a whole year,” the association said. The bulletin noted that the public had at last been Informed about the "appalling shortcomings” at Qui Nhon. But it added: “They have not yet been told about the obstruction which medical volunteers have met with in the past from various bureaucratic agencies.” The bulletin did not elaborate on its statement concerning bureaucratic agencies.
