Cruelty To Mare
(N.Z. Press Association) LEVIN. The promising sprinter. They Told Me, was found leg-roped and neck-tied by her owner, Mr N. Mortimer, on Sunday night. Mr Mortimer and his father went to see the horse in her yard, and found her with a slipknot around her neck, the rope being tied to a post in the yard, and her hind hocks tied together with slip-knots. Mr Mortimer said yesterday that it was only because his mare was so quiet that it could have been tied. Both of They Told Me’s hind legs were swollen from the rope burns caused by the knots, but the swelling had gone down a little yesterday. It is hoped that this will not hamper her future career.
"Had the mare fallen over, she would never have regained her footing, with her hind legs tied, and would most likely have suffered a slow death of strangulation,” Mr Mortimer said.
This is the second time horses have been tampered with tn Levin since Christmas. SeniorSergeant C. J. Smillie said that inquiries were being made. They Told Me Is at present spelling, and it was hoped to bring her back into light work at the end of July. Mr Mortimer raced the mare in Canterbury until he moved to the North Island recently.
