Lordtuckey Best Awapuni Worker
"The Press" Special Service
PALMERSTON NORTH. The hack stayers, Lordtuckey and Foxoman, both of which are engaged in the June Hack Handicap at the Manawatu meeting tomorrow, appeared to handle the soft and puggy ground better than most other trialists at Awapuni yesterday morning. Lordtuckey is a form runner this week, while Foxoman looks ready to improve on his poor showings at
Wanganui. The shifty ground there was apparently against him.
Royal Admiral gave an improved display of jumping yesterday while Copper Fair, Blue Lord and Battleground were others to jump well. On the course proper where the going on Saturday is holding Lordtuckey was much better than Mr Jones at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 40 2-ssec, the last three in 44sec. Lordtuckey is in good form and he looks a bright prospect this week. Foxoman ran his last three furlongs better than anything else. He went right away from King Midas at the finish of five furlongs in Imin lOsec, the last three in 41 sec. Gipsy Fire was working strongly alongside Tyrol at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 43sec, the last three in 44sec. Gipsy Fire should test the hack hurdlers this week. Comdtis and High Filou covered five furlongs in Imin Usee the last three in 41 2-5 sec. This was good work and they handled the ground well. Blue Lord outpaced Bairam when they schooled over four hurdles, Blue Lord finishing clear. He may pass up the hack hurdles tomorrow to race in the City Hack Handicap.
Battleground was far more impressive than Potan over six hurdles. They later jumped two of the steeplechase fences. Battleground schools very well for a novice.
Royal Admiral improved on recent showings to lead Legatus and York Abbey over six hurdles, Royal Admiral giving a fast and dean display. On this exhibition he looks the pick of the trio in the Ruahine Hack Hurdles.
Copper Fair jumped neatly over four hurdles and then ran five furlongs on the inside trial in Imin Bsec, the last three in 41sec. He looks a first class prospect in the steeplechase.
