Toheroa Poacher “A Professional”
(New Zealand Press Association)
DARGAVILLE, June 9
John Cassidy, of Auckland, alleged to be a professional toheroa poacher, was fined £250, the maximum penalty, by Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., today for having toheroas out of season.
Cassidy was also fined £5O for having undersized toheroas.
“It’s obvious this man is treating it as a business,” said Mr W. A. Macleod for the
Marine Department “He appears to be completely ignoring the Court’s penalties.” Mr Macleod said Cassidy had been convicted a number of times on similar offences and in all cases but one the fines exceeded £2OO. The highest was £4OO for charges involving 14,084 toheroas. A fisheries inspector, George Read, said he found 1555 toheroas in Cassidy's truck. The Magistrate said the confiscation of Cassidy's motorvehicle would be a more effective deterrent If the Court had such power.
