RADIATION PLANT
Installation In Upper Hutt
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, June 9.
The first gamma radi-tion plant for the sterilisation of medical supplies in the Southern Hemisphere will come into use in Upper Hutt in July. The £24,000 plant, described as the first major industrial application of atomic energy in New Zealand, is being completed at the Tasman Medical Laboratory, a spokesman for the laboratory said today. New Zealand was the fourth country in the world to have such a plant.
A shipment of 16,000 cobalt curies arrived from Canada about five weeks ago, and when this is installed the plant will be ready for use. Advantages over the steam process at present used in hospitals mean that lower cost materials can be sterilized after they have been packed. The new equipment will undergo testing before commercial operation. Safeguards exist in case of earthquake. Other countries using gamma radiation plants are the United States, England and Japan.
