HIROSHIMA DAY DATE
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 9 The White House has made It clear that' Luci Johnson’s wedding date will not be changed from August 6 in spite of an appeal from a pacifist organisation in Hiroshima. The Hiroshima World Friendship Centre had appealed to the President to change the date, saying it was not considerate to hold celebration parties all over Washington, D.C., while Japanese were holding memorial services for the 80,000 people killed by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. August 6 is the 21st anniversary of the explosion.
Mrs Johnson’s Press Secretary said that, “as eyeryone understands, a girl sets her wedding date for reasons quite apart from historical events.”
Spinning Demonstration.— A demonstration of spinning was given by Mrs Valerie Gifford before a meeting of the Christchurch High School Old Giris’ Association. ■ Mrs Gifford is a member of the Oxford branch of the association. She also brought along garments and rugs which had been made from home-spun wools.
