VENEREAL DISEASE
‘Alarming’ Rise In Australia
6V.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 9.
Venereal disease was increasing at an alarming rate in Australia, particularly among teenagers, the Federal President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr. A. Murray, said yesterday. He was commenting on three reports on venereal disease in New South Wales. South Australia and Western Australia, which have been given to a special committee. The committee, which has branches in each State, was formed by the A.M.A. last year to investigate the problem of venereal disease.
Dr. Murray said the A.M.A. would release statistics when reports from each of the other States had been received.
“We hope that when we do get the figures we will really drop a bombshell in the community,” he said. He said venereal disease had got out of control. “There is a lot of complacency about venereal disease because the facts are not known,” Dr. Murray said.
