Athletics To Back Games Appeal
The Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will try to supply as many collectors as possible to assist the Empire Games Promotion Committee to raise funds for its delegation to travel to Jaimaica.
At its meeting last evening the executive decided that its secretary (Mr I. D. Teague) should contact all club secretaries or presidents personally rather than send letters.
A letter was received from the promotion committee saying that its street appeal would be on Friday, July 8. The committee asked for the association to supply 50 collectors.
The chairman (Mr W. A. Kennedy) said that the association was bound to give its support because athletics was a major sport of the Empire Games. Mr B. Kerr said that street appeals were usually in aid of charitable organisations. He doubted whether this appeal would receive as much support. It might have been better to appeal to sporting organisations, he suggested. Mr N. A. Smith agreed with Mr Kerr, but said that the decision to hold a street appeal had been made. Mr Kennedy said there was no doubt that the committee was not sparing any effort and that it was trying to do the best to get the Empire Games to Christchurch.
Wellington Meeting.—The executive agreed to a request from Wellington to hold the
annual inter-provincial meeting at the Evans Bay allweather track on January 28.
Children's Athletics. A children's under-age team would represent the centre in a meeting against Marlborough at Blenheim on December 4, the executive decided after receiving a request from Marlborough.
