MEMBERSHIP OF UNIONS
Conscientious Objections
Membership of the Exclusive Brethren precluded him from belonging to a trade union or any other organisation or association, Brian Anthony Suckling, aged 20, an aircraft tradesman, told the Conscientious Objection Committee yesterday. “My conscience says I cannot be a member of any organisation Christ is not Head of,” he said. Suckling was one of a number of applicants seeking exemption from the unqualified preference clause of their awards which says that workers under the award must become members of the union within 14 days of taking up employment. The committee comprising Mr H. L. Bockett (chairman), the Rev. J. R. Naim, Mr R. W. Freeman, and Mr G. Brown (secretary and Government representative), reserved its decision. Decisions were reserved on objections by Alan Campbell Williamson, aged If?, a shop assistant; Shirley Ann King, aged 20, a typist: Dianne Jones, aged 19. a cleric; Alan Harden, a timber worker: Helen Lydia Hickmott, aged 18. a bookkeeping machinist:; William George Sincock, aged 66. a cleric: Denise Ann. Sparks, aged 19, an apprentice dressmaker.
