More Pensioners’ Cottages Planned
Immediate steps will be taken by the Paparua County Council to get loan authority to allow it to build pensioners’ cottages at Hornby, and to ask the Ministry of Works to sell land adjoining Wycola Park as a site for
the cottages. Cr. L. J. Cutler said at a meeting of the council last night thought should be given to locating the Hornby cottages on or nearer to a bus route.
“It is not quite as isolated as it might appear,” said Cr. H. W. Bennett. “The site is handy to shops. The decision is not definite, but it may be the best bit of land Hornby can find.” The council considered tenders for the construction of 10 more cottages at Weaver place, Sockbum, and accepted a price of £15,998 from T. P. Capon, Ltd. Unsuccesful tenderers were E. Watts, Ltd. (£16,000) and Jan Alberts, Ltd. (£16,557). Authority was received from and the treasury to raise a loan of £11,500 towards the cost of the Sockbum units.
No Support— The City Council wrote, saying that it was not prepared at present to support a request for the declaration of Annex road as a State highway. Declined.—;On the townplanning committee’s recommendation, the council declined a Canterbury Aero Club request that it be allowed to buy an acre of City Council land on Russley road, 12 chains north of Memorial avenue, for the erection of club buildings. The committee said that concern was expressed at the proposed change of use of Russley road land, and it was suggested that more favourable consideration would be given to a site in Orchard road.
Parking.—The council expressed concern at peak-per->iod parking at the Racecourse Hotel, and agreed to ask the hotel to improve its off-street
parking space, and to have a report prepared on the problem. It was said that vehicles at the hotel could be dangerous to children. St. John Site.— Four sites for a proposed St John Ambulance Association training centre at Hornby were suggested, at Carmen road, Tower street, next to the Health Department’s clinic at Shands road and at the corner of Neill street and the Main South road. The sites were referred to the association for its views.
More Land.— The Government valuation of £450 was set as the price of a council section adjoining the Hornby Licensing Trust property at Tower street, which the trust wants to buy. The sale was made conditional to there being no objection from the Plunket Society, as occupier. Rubbish Pits.—The Engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg) was asked to report on the possibility of establishing rural rubbish tips to meet a lack in the southern part of the county.
Wages.—On the motion of Cr. L. P. Manion, a sub-com-mittee was set up to review staff wages. Some staff, especially labourers were not geting enough and there were anomalies, he said.
