STUDY OF HUNGER

Foundation Planned

To mark its cententary, the world-wide group of Nestle companies which has its headquarters in Switzerland, has established a special foundation to study and help alleviate food problems in underdeveloped countries. The general manager of the New Zealand branch of the company (Mr H. W. Marchant) said the foundation had been created with an initial grant of £1,660,000. Mr Marchant will leave Auckland tonight for Switzerland to attend the centennial meetings, which will include the launching of the foundation.

He said that the foundation would encourage studies directly connected with food in the field of agricultural and animal production, chemistry and food technology, biology and physiology. He anticipated that scholarships would be granted to enable specially-qualified persons to carry out studies in their own countries or abroad. The foundation would award prizes for work done to combat malnutrition, sponsor food study seminars and scientific meetings and publish technical works on the problems and alleviation of malnutrition, he said.
