The Red Cross

The Red Cross is the world’s largest independent relief organisation. It works in war and in peace; it is a good neighbour to the old, the sick, and the infirm, and a good neighbour especially to any country where people are afflicted by disaster. It is ready to send relief swiftly in great emergencies and small; when an earthquake devastates a city or when fire destroys a single home and the possessions of the household. The Red Cross trains young persons to be alert to the need for such humanitarian work and to be adept in carrying it out It co-operates with other welfare organisations, and no just appeal for its assistance is rejected if the means to answer it are available.

For these good works the Red Cross depends on the enterprise and industry of its members and, from time to time, on public generosity. In Christchurch today citizens are asked to give their support to a street appeal and market The income from these will be used to swell funds that are never large enough to answer all the calls for help throughout the world. The Red Cross is one of the most efficient agents of the community; it commands an army of unpaid workers in this city, and the New Zealand Red Cross Society supports a continually growing chain of relief establishments across the Pacific, in Asia, and in Europe. All citizens can further this work today. A “good neighbour” deserves their aid.
