ADDINGTON MARKET Better Prices For Fat Cattle: Good Sale For Ewes
Store sheep and fat sheep values showed little variation at the weekly Addington stock market yesterday. Fat ewes continued to meet a buoyant sale, there was a little more strength in the market for a small entry of wethers.
Fat lambs were again yarded in large numbers, but values were perhaps not as strong as they were last week. The market was quoted as firm to a shade easier.
Values for steers and heifers in the fat cattle section opened on a stronger note, and with a small entry on hand, closed markedly stronger.
A small entry of store cattle met an excellent sale, there being a strong inquiry for steers and breeding cows. The market next week will revert to the usual Tuesday fixture.
Store Sheep A fair-sized gallery followed the store sheep sale, and where good quality lots were on oiler, buying power appeared a little stronger. The store lamb entry was 1537, compared with 1675 last week, while the adult sheep entry rose from 379 to 1069. The lamb entry varied considerably. While there were some attractive pens of both ewe and wether lambs, there were also quite a number of nondescript lots. Demand was fairly steady, with the pick of the Romney wether iamb entry selling from 60s to 65s 6d. with average quality selling from 52s to 58s. Values for Romney wether lambs in the wool were similar. Some useful lots of ewe iambs were forward in an entry of 473, and top price was S7s 6d for a pen of 70 Romneys. Shorn ewe lambs of the same breeding sold to 65s 6d. The best of the Corriedale and halfbred ewe lambs sold to 765, and there were sales of average quality at 61s 6d to 66s 6d. While the adult sheep entry was not a large one. It included some useful breeding ewes, and values were generally in line with recent rates. A pen of 154 sound-mouthed Corriedales from Walau topped the section at 80s, and another pen of mated Corriedales realised 695. The best of the one-year ewes sold from 60s 6d to 63s 6d, with lighter-framed ewes selling from 52s to 565. The adult sheep entry included 115 two-tooth ewes, and these sold at 73s and 90s 6d respectively. The top priced pen consisted of late-shorn mated halfbreds. A striking feature of the store sheep sale—especially the lambs —was the number of psns which had been ticketed for lice infestation. The lamb section, in fact, looked like the sheep pens at a country show.
In spite of the small entry yesterday, the saleyards dip was worked till after mid-day. Although the weather was fine, it was rather cold for dipping, and those sheep which had to be dipped looked far from their best.
Fat Lambs Fat lambs met a steady sale, although the entry was again a large one at 3346 head. Quality was generally fairly good. Competition was well spread, with freezing works buyers taking a fair part of the entry. Values, however, were not as strong, generally, as last sale, being quoted as firm to a shade easier. With some exceptions, quality was very moderate, with only a small proportion of prime butchers’ steers being offered. The market for steers and heifers opened at par to £1 dearer than last sale, but toward the finish, the small yarding resulted in values rising £3 to £4 a head.

Dairy Cattle Although .quality was not up to that of last week, dairy cattle had another good sale The market was followed by a large gallery and there was competition from a Tlmaru buyer. The yarding was a small one, there being nine heifers and seven cows. The best of the heifers sold from £49 to £56, medium to good £42 to £4B, with others down to £36. The best of the cow offering sold from £4B to £56, with one sale at £65, while the remainder sold down to £3l.
Store Cattle Store cattle met a very strong sale. With quality taken into account, both steers and breeding cons appeared to reach their highest point of the season. The entry totalled 212 head, compared with 288 last week. It included 75 calves, most of which were a rather mixed selection. Steers attracted a very strong inquiry, with the best of the adult cattle selling at £47 18s 6d, and steers aged 20 months selling to £42 13s 6d. Breeding cows were still in demand, but there was a very small entry. A line of 33 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross' cows and heifers from Gienhope, Lewis Pass, met an excellent sale at £39 3s 6d to £4O 18s 6d, and there were other sales of mated cows at £34 Ss 6d to £37 3s 6d.

Fat Pigs
The fat pig yarding was somewhat smaller but quality was very mixed. A large number o! short, over-fat pigs were included. and these were hard to sell, as they are not wanted by the trade. There were alsc quite a number of light and unfinished porkers, and w-Itt very little competition from fatteners, these were also d-.ti cult to quit. Good quality pork however, met a keen demand with values fully firm on las week. Very few baconers were offered and values were on ; par with late rates.
