SOME KIWI PLACES STILL IN DOUBT
(Scio Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Some positions are not easy to select in the 1966 Kiwi test sides, Mr W. Telford, the convener of the national Rugby League selection panel, said yesterday.
Mr Telford and the other two selectors, Mr M. Church (Wellington) and Mr E. Butts (Christchurch) between them saw six provincial fixtures featuring Auckland, Canterbury, Waikato, Northland. Taranaki and Bay of Plenty last week-
end. They will see four more matches this week-end, the
Southern quadrangular tournament between Canterbury, Manawatu, Otago and West Coast. Mr Telford said that new talent had developed this year and that the selectors were not worried over choosing a strong side to play the two test against the touring British team in August. "We have confirmed our opinions on some players and {will see as many more games as
we can before announcing our first test side on July 25,” he said. “Auckland set a standard over the week-end and proved its superiority.” Auckland withstood challengers from Wellington and Canterbury, 20-7 and 28-5, respectively, to register its seventh successive defence of the Northern Union Cup, the Rugby League symbol of supremacy between provinces.
