The athletic section of the Empire Games team should travel to Jamaica independant of the New Zealand team and compete in pre-games meetings in Honolulu and California, said the 1960 Olympic team captain, L. R. Mills. He is a leading prospect to win a gold medal for New Zealand in Jamaica, in the shot put and discus.
