North Gets 11 In Universities XV

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. Eleven North Island players—six forwards and five backs—have been included in the New Zealand Universities Rugby team to play Otago at Dunedin on Saturday. Two of those chosen after North had trounced South in the inter-island universities fixture at Garisbrook yesterday did not play in the match.

They are the All Black trialist second five-eighths, G. F. Kember (Victoria), and the flanker, R. T. de Cleene (also Victoria).

The only South Islanders to win places are the All Black inside backs, C. R. Laidlaw

'and E. W. Kirton (Otago), the I All Black trialist lock, G. T. Pohlen (Otago), and the Lincoln College prop, H. Meech.

The team is: M. W. Wiiliment (Victoria): D. H. Montgomery, G. D. Weston (Auckland), A. Osborne (Victoria); G. F. Kember (Victoria); E. W. Kirton (Otago); C. R. Laidlaw (Otago); G. L. Hermansson (Victoria, captain); H. D. Barton, R. T. de Cleene, C. D. Mantell (Victoria), G. T. Pohlen (Otago); H. Meech (Lincoln), K. O’Shannessey (Auckland), T. K. McDonald (Victoria). Reserves: P. A. Lindesay (Auckland), K. N. Grant, D. C. Hogg (Victoria), W. Thompson (Lincoln). 28-11 Victory The North beat South, 2811, at Carisbrook. South had slightly the better of the first half and led, 6-5, at the break, but its outlook, even then, was ominous. There had been growing signs of looseness in the lineouts and the spirited drive of the forwards had subsided. North, meanwhile, had seemed to be gathering momentum, both back and forward. From the start of the second half it was quick to attack South’s weaker links and in the final 25 minutes it poured on 23 points. Best of Rugby

Although not without blemish the North forwards played with superb efficiency and

the backs used the ball in a manner which typified the best of Rugby. When they were working at a pitch the North forwards thundered into., the rucks as a unit and had the ball back with heeling which was swift and clean.

For North, tries were scored by D. G. Hogg (2), A. J. Osborne, R. Simmers, H. Barton and D. H. Montgomery. M. Williment converted five.

C. R. Laidlaw and D. Ongley scored tries for South, D. C. Leary converting one and kicking a penalty.
