Selwyn Now Sole Table Tennis Leader

Selwyn became sole leader of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s senior interclub competition after the seventh round of matches was played last evening. It drew its contest with Wallabies Red while its coleader previously. Eagles, went down to an improving Wallabies Green team. In the most exciting contest of the season so far, Selwyn and Wallabies Red drew six matches each and 14 games each. V. N. Brightwell (Selwyn) and M. A. Cox fought out a terrific singles match in which fiery but sound attack met rock-like defence. R. J. Scott improved but H. P. Holt (Selwyn) was not as consistent as he has been in recent weeks.

Brightwell was undefeated, while Scott and N. B. Radford won two singles matches each. Eagles, the coleader with Selwyn, crashed to a 4-8 defeat against Wallabies Green. The three final matches, which all went to the advantage game, decided the match. J. Armstrong again won all bis singles for Eagles, while all three Wallabies Green players won two singles. This consistency proved decisive. Celtic proved too strong for University and gained a comfortable victory, all three singles players gaining two wins. Lou of form by J. E. Kyle

proved to be Linwood’s undoing when it met Avonside. Avonside won six singles matches, K. Ward winning all three In which he played.

Competition points after seven rounds are:—Selwyn 11, Eagles 10, Avonside 8, Wallabies Green 8, Wallabies Red 7, Linwood 6, Celtic 4, University 2. Wallabies Rad 4, Selwyn 4
