WALTHAM SCHOOL

Memories Of Past

Memories of past sporting days were relived by a small, select group of former pupils of the Waltham School —r all of whom had earned prominence in sporting participation or administration in the school’s hall last night. The gathering was part of the schoool’s seventy-fifth jubilee celebrations but attendance was confined to prominent sportsmen and women. The evening was of a fairly informal nature and part of the time was spent browsing through photographs of the school’s sports teams. Among these who attended were Mr W. A. Hadlee, the former New Zealand cricket captain, Mrs O. Jekyll, a national women’s fencing champion, and Mr W. H. Fright, the former international Rugby referee. Waltham has earned a reputation as a most sportsminded school and some of its products have won international reputations in sport, among them are the All Blacks, C. J. Oliver and D. Young. On the home fields, J. Swarbrick (motor cycling), J. R. Brown and J. M. Carr (athletics), W. H. Cunningham (cricket) have all excelled. One former pupil at present representing New Zealand overseas is Miss P. Moore, a member of the women’s cricket team in England.
