Fishermen Refer Dispute To F.O.L.
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 8. The Napier fishing dispute would be referred to the Federation of Labour, the president of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union (Mr Martin) said today.
The union decided to take this action after the cancellation of a meeting in Wellington today between representatives of the Commercial Fishing Boat-owners’ Association and the owners of the Wel-lington-based Coromel, the Napier-based Taiaroa, and other cod-fishing vessels. “The boat-owners refused to meet us,” Mr Martin said.
The parties had agreed in Napier to a meeting in Wellington convened by the Department of Labour.
The Secretary of Labour (Mr H. Parsonage) said the boat-owners later declined to attend because of "circumstances which had arisen after the Napier meeting." The dispute began on March 25 when the crew of the Taiaroa demanded better pay and working conditions. The owner called the demands “completely unrealistic.”
