E.L.D.O. Members Fear Costs

LONDON, June 8
Doubts are growing a~nong officials concerned with the European Launcher Development Organisation (E.L.D.0.) whether it will be possible to continue without Britain, “The Times” reported.
The newspaper said in a report from Brussels, the officials fear that the cost — which will be almost doubled if Britain withdraws—will prove too heavy. Some officials admit privately that too much money was demanded from Britain in the original negotiations for E.L.D.0., it said.
The British Government
was desperate to share the load of Blue Streak. It was in no position to argue, and —some Europeans now feel—too much advantage was taken of the British weakness.
Accordingly, they believe that the present Government would be acting with some justification, and in Its own best interests, if it took a stana on reducing the size of its contribution to E.L.D.0., rather than on deciding to withdraw completely. “The Times" said the officials believe E.L.D.O. is essential if Europe is to play any part in space technology to compete with the United States.
