Irrigation Charges

Sir,—ln a report from a meeting held by irrigators of the Ashburton-Lyndhurst and Mayfield-Hinds irrigation schemes it was stated that the Government proposes to increase charges for water 600 per cent from 2s to 12s an acre-foot. This is incorrect as the 2s is for a six-inch cover, while the 12s is for an acrefoot. The charge for water has been 4s 6d an acre-foot, less 6d if paid within 28 days, for 18 years. These gentlemen are well aware of this and it does them no credit to attempt to dramatise in such a way as to give a false impression. —Yours, etc., IRRIGATOR. June 6, 1966.
