“The Press” In 1866
June 11 HOKITIKA NEWS.—A branch of Madame Sohier’s waxwork exhibition, including all the celebrated and fashionable murderers, has arrived. One of the celebrities may be daily viewed in her animate state behind a bar. It is not often one has the opportunity of seeing one’s own image in such company and under such flattering circumstances. His Lordship the Bishop arrived last night per coach. It does one good to see a dignitary of the Established Church
amongst us. I do trust that his Lordship will deem it advisable to establish in our midst a minister of the Church of England. No doubt Hokitika will bestir itself in the matter, and ascertain the Bishop's wishes. The branch line of telegraph to the Grey will soon be completed, and link us more closely to another important branch of the province. By-the-by the Westland road—let those who abuse John Hall ask the Westland cattle dealers why meat to sold at 7d per lb.
