DANGEROUS FISHING
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, June 8.
A vicar has joined the “danger men” who risk their lives fishing In ancient Viking style in the Solway Firth. The Rev. M. Allen, aged 49, of Cumberland, stands chestdeep in muddy channels of the Solway with other haafnet fishermen, using nets on long poles to haul out salmon.
“Sometimes it is really frightening. The tide is often faster than a galloping horse.
“The water can rise until there is just your hat floating. If you get into difficulties you cannot expect help from the other fishermen,” said Mr Allen.
“It's not that they don't want to, but in these waters it would be too much of a risk for them,” he said.
