Comedian And Wife Part
(N.Z. Pr«*s A«sn—Copgrioht) LONDON, June 7. The comedian, Jimmy Edwards and his wife have parted. Mrs Valerie Edwards, aged 39, is in hospital, the “Evening Standard” reported. A relative said she was not seriously ill. While in Australia recently, Mr Edwards, aged 46, announced his retirement as a comedian to concentrate on character acting. For this he has shaved off his famous moustache. Mrs Alan Edwards, his sis-ter-in-law, said at Fittleworth, Sussex, “I am afraid there is little chance of Jimmy and his wife coming together again.” Known on the music halls as “Professor" Jimmy Edwards, he became famous with his radio shows “Take It From Here” in which he co-starred with the Australians Dick Bentley and Joy Nichols.
Mr Edwards, a war-time fighter pilot with the D.F.C., was Rector of Aberdeen University in 1951, and is a Cambridge M.A.
CORRECTION The requiem mass for the crew of the Kaitawa was held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic church, Lyttelton, not at St. John’s church as reported yesterday.
