SUPPORTING U.N.’s ROLE
International Essay Contest
A second international essay competition is at present being organised by the World Veterans’ Federation and is sponsored by its magazine, “World Veteran.” The New Zealand Air Force Association, which is a member of the federation, is inviting entries from the public to take part in the contest. The organisation’s programme is to support the reinforcement of the United Nations by increasing public understanding. Three prizes are offered, for the essays, which should be no longer than 1000 words. First prize is $5OO, second is $250, and third prize is $lOO. Other supporting organisations of the World Veterans’ Federation are the ex-P.O.W. and Returned Services Associations.
The competition is divided into two sections: a youth section for contestants between the ages of 17 and 20 years which has the subject: “What I can do to help the United Nations,” and contestants in a veteran section for bona fide war veterans or war victims are required to write 1000 words on “To strengthen the United Nations’ role for peace.” Entries will be judged by an international panel in Paris. Entry forms are available by writing and enclosing stamps to P.O. Box 792, Christchurch.
Fire Prevention.—Sister P. H. Ryan of St Helen’s Hospital will be presented with the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s annual fire prevention award at a small ceremony in the board’s offices today. The award is for outstanding work in fire prevention.
