Communist Party President Dead

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, June 6. Mr Mervyn Haley Williams, of Mt. Roskill, who was a member of the New ZealandCommunist Party for 35 years and its national president for the last three years, has died in Auckland. He was 61.

Mr Williams, who had been ill for some time, last year visited China for treatment. Mr Williams was educated at Auckland Grammar School. He joined the Communist Party in 1930 and quickly became one of its leaders. At his death he had been on its national committee for 26 years and chairman of its control commission for more than 20 years. When in 1963 Mr G. Jack-

son resigned as national president, shortly before breaking away from the New Zealand Communist Party, his place was taken by Mr Williams.

As a party official he made many trips overseas, particularly to Communist countries. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and five grandchildren. The Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party has cabled the New Zealand Communist Party expressing deep sorrow at the death of Mr Williams.
