“NO,” FOR 193 YEARS
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P A.) LONDON.
The Sheffield Assay Act of 1773 has halted a plan to export gold and silver-headed putters to the United States. The professional at the Sheffield City Golf Club, D. Clay, had asked the Assay office about a hallmark but it was refused because he was using precious metal. “They suggested I should
use wood, but I told them wooden shafts went out 30 years ago."
The putters, costing £260 and £26, cannot be sold without a hallmark.
The Northern Assay master said the Act prohibited the use of a base metal with gold or silver.
Because of regulations restricting the use of gold it was unlikely the putters could be exported.
