LEAGUE SELECTORS DROP FLAVELL

The Canterbury Rugby League second row forward W. A. Flavell (Marist), has been dropped from the 17-man squad announced last evening for the quadrangular tournament at the Show Grounds on Saturday and Sunday.

The promising Kaiapoi centre, B. Williams, and the Hornby and former Canterbury half-back, R. A. Neiman, have been added to the squad.

The exclusion of Flavell and the non-availability of R. S. J. Irvine (Marist) are the only alterations to the squad that was named to play Auckland.

G. J. Abercrombie (Linwood), who suffered a leg injury in a club match on Saturday, has been included It is expected that all 17 will have a game during the tournament, with four of the leading players being rested on Saturday when Canterbury meets Manawatu.

Williams has deserved his chance. He has scored four tries for Kaiapoi and played extremely well to score another for a Canterbury XIII against the Ex-Kiwis.- He was called on to stand by in case

Although he was not overimpressive when playing for Canterbury last season, Neiman has shown quite good form for Hornby this year: His ability to play in either half-back position would have had an influence on his selection following Irvine’s withdrawal. Flavell did not play particularly well against Auckland but his exclusion will rob Canterbury of its only successful forward partnership—that between he and M. H. Mohi (Marist).

Only six forwards have been named, but two utility players, E. Kereopa (Linwood) and I. T. Drayton (Hornby), are in the squad. It is.—
