A 1904 LION

It is ironical that one of the oldest surviving international Rugby players, the 84-year-old Mr J. L. Fisher, did not see this year’s British Lions team in Australia. Mr Fisher, shown above with one of the trophies he received during his playing career, was a member of the 1904 British team that visited Australia and New Zealand. He returned to Australia to settle in 1911. He has seen every British touring team since th’at time except M. J. Camp-bell-Lainerton’s side which is the most successful to visit Australia.

Mr Fisher did not play in the New Zealand section of the 1904 tour, but on his return to England that year was offered £lOOO by the Hull Rugby League Club to play professionally. He refused the offer.

Only four members of the 1904 team are still alive, and Mr Fisher returned home three years ago to see one of them, Mr C. F. Stranger-Leathes.

Mr Fisher has an interesting observation to make on Ri'igby today: “It's certainly faster, but basically still the same.”
