Eye Operation For Boxer

The former New Zealand middle-weight and light heavy-weight boxing champion, F. Manuao, has retired from the ring. The 22-year-old Tongan visited an eye specialist on Friday and was told that he would have to undergo an operation for the removal of a cataract in his right eye.

According to his manager, Mr B. Hafoaka, Manuao will have to wear heavy glasses to compensate for the loss of sight in this eye. He also has a cataract in his left eye, he said. With no more bouts in the ring th- »< i> a possibility that this eye will heal with treatment. He added that Manuao could “only see a blur” with his right eye. This had resulted from continuous blows to the head in the ring.
