Driver Erred The Queen opened the new apple market in Cardiff with a ride around the premises on. a forklift, the deputychairman of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board (Mr H. R. Sampson) said yesterday. Market staff had prepared for weeks to ensure that her ride would be a pleasant one without unrehearsed incidents. However, the forklift driver was so overwhelmed when the Queen arrived that he drove her around the factory the wrong way. Good Weight Egg buyers can be reasonably sure that they are getting good weight for theii money, according to “Con sumer,” published by the Con sumer Council. In Auckland Christchurch, and Dunedin 110 dozen eggs in cartons were bought, and each egg weighed. One carton was twc drams underweight. Not one egg was more more than twc drams below the permitted weight, and some cartons were well above the grade weight. Fine Weather The temperature did nol rise above 51 degrees in Christchurch yesterday. This maximum was reached •al 3 p.m., and an hour latei the temperature had dropped one degree. The lowest temperature was 42 degrees al 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The weathei was fine, after cloud between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and the wind was a light westerly Today’s forecast is for fine weather, with a light south westerly. Service In London The joint Commonwealtli Societies Council, which is responsible for the central celebration of Commonwealtli Day in London, has arranged for a multi-religious service to be held in the church oi St. Martin-in-the-Fields or June 11. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be present. Representatives 01 the Buddhist, Christian Hindu and Islamic religions will participate. London June 7. Karamu Delayed After being delayed at Lyttelton since Friday because she was short of one able seaman, the Union Company’s freighter Karamu sailed for Melbourne yesterday with a full complement She finished loading refrigerated and general cargo early on Friday. There has been a shortage of seamen in New Zealand ports, particularly Lyttelton, in recent weeks Men are frequently flowr from one end of the country to the other to meet the demand. Good Tramping Good tramping weather clear days and rain only ir the evenings was experi enced by members of the Christchurch Tramping Clut during the week-end. One party of nine went by utility vehicle to Lake Sumner and tramped up the Hurunui rivei over Harper’s Pass, and dowr the Taramakau river, and re turned by train from Otira. A second party, also of nine covered the same route in the opposite direction. Seven clut members tramped to the Crowe Hut, in the Arthur’s Pass National Park, and foui others drove to Lake Brunnei and explored along the Trent river, an area new to the club. Scandinavian Ships Four Scandinavian vessels discharged cargo at Lyttelton yesterday. They are the Tra jan (sulphur from Nauru) the Tysla (West Europear cargo), the tanker Norse Lion (oil from Marsder Point) and the Carib (Lana nas from Ecuador). The Caril is Swedish-registered and the other three are registered ir Norway.
