To Lay Foundation Stone For Chapel

In one of his last acts as warden of Christchurch College, the retiring Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) will lay the foundation stone for its chapel at I lam next Saturday at 10.30 a.m. The contract for the striking structure, designed by Messrs Warren and Mahoney, will not be let for a month or two, but this ceremony will precede the start of work to mark Bishop Warren’s active part in planning the new college at Ham and the chanel in particular. Christchurch College expects to take possession of Its new premises on August 22. and immediately move in 120 residents for the third term of the university. The present college in RoUeston avenue (formerly College House) has housed about 75 students. This number dropped when Chichele House was taken over by the Y.M.CA., but accommodation Is now provided for 84. The new Christchurch College at Ham initiallv will take 120 students (already chosen) in eight three-storey units each of whi'-h will have 15 bedroom-studies. There is a senarate dining and administration block. additional residential wings and a library and lectureroom block.

Working drawings for the chapel, with soaring roof, have been approved by the college board, but await formal approval of the Canterbury University Council. The chapel is expected to take about six months to build.
