An Australian mathematician, his wife, and two children are spending a fortnight at Sydney's quarantine sta-l tion to satisfy a Common-! wealth health rule. One of the children had not i received a smallpox vaccina-I tion, because of a medical i condition. Health officials learned this | when the family of Dr. Kovacs returned to Sydney by air from San Francisco yesterday. Dr. Kovacs, a fellow in mathematics of the department of mathematics in the Australian National University’s Institute of Advanced Studies, Canberra, had been abroad on leave for six months. He spent most of the leave studying in New York. An officer said later thedepartment's rule was not to "break up” families. Officials therefore had arranged for Dr. Kovacs and his wife to stay with their children at the quarantine station. Two nursing sisters would look after the family for the next fortnight, the officer •aid.
