Civil Defence
Sir, —It was sickening to those keen on civil defence, to note on television the other night the recently-appointed Christchurch Civil Defence Officer express the opinion that there is no interest in civil defence. He is too new to the job to realise that this apathy is entirely the fault of the civil defence authorities. For the last seven years the writer and others have X
pressed for intelligent planning and publicity, and for practical and realistic civil defence. One has merely come, up against a brick wall, and a policy which appears to . merely require paper schemes and jobs for the boys. To anyone who knows about civil defence it is a closed shop! There is no question of lack of funds in fact, With the resources and the time that has been available, a first-class Civil Defence Organisation could have been built up at least three times over.—Yours, etc.,
CIVIL DEFENDER. June 6, 1966.
