Farm Costs

Sir, —Two separate items in your news column in the last week make it all too clear just how the cost of living is rising to the detriment of all and sundry and the New Zealand farmer in particular. One was the flat wage increase and the increase of 25s per ton in superphosphate. Added to this is a 7) per cent increase in county rates here in Marlborough. Just how desperate the overall economy of New Zealand is at the moment is underlined by the departure of the Deputy-Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) in an urgent attempt to raise further loans. The real cause of all this haste is the disappointingly low build-up of London funds. May I suggest that Mr Marshall reads Professor Melliman’s latest book, “Our Depleted Society,” and so save himself the trouble and time of visiting America in a vain attempt to put right a worldwide phenomenon, i.e, inflation.—Yours, etc., H. H. VAVASOUR.—

Blenheim, June 6, 1966.
